On November 20, 2014 president Barack Obama announced his long awaited executive action on immigration, which will affect an estimated 5 million undocumented people currently living in the United States.

While the president emphasized his actions don’t provide a path to citizenship the new executive rule allows the following:

Undocumented parents of U.S. citizen and lawful permanent resident children who lived in the United States for at least 5 years, will be allowed to stay in the country temporarily if they pay taxes and pass a background check.

The president also announced his new immigration enforcement program will shift deportation priority from families to felons.

Details of the implementation of these new rules has yet to be seen.
